Our Mission

Inspiring you to feel smarter and happier through the power of nonprofit media.

History - Founded in 1961

The FCC awarded a license to Vincent J. Thomas and Hunter B. Andrews, of the Norfolk and Hampton school systems respectively, to operate Virginia's first non-commercial, educational television station. WHRO broadcast as Home Room One as a way to use television to assist with teaching in the classroom.

These efforts expanded to other school systems, and today WHRO Public Media is owned by a group of 21 local public school districts collectively known as the Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association. Through WHRO TV, WHRO FM, WHRV FM, WFOS FM, its website, and educational content delivered online to more than 286,000 students and 25,000 teachers, WHRO enriches the lives of the people of Eastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina every day.
